The
history of America is the story of a
great nation created from a vast
wilderness in just a little over 500
years ago. America was
discovered by Christopher Columbus, an
Italian explorer, on October 12, 1492.
However, it was an Italian sailor,
Amerigo Vespucci, who realized that
Columbus had discovered a new
continent. And...so it was, in
his honor, that America received her
name.
Although
the American Indians were the first to
live on the land, therefore, making
them the true Native Americans, it was
the British who brought colonies to
America. The Mayflower brought
the first permanent settlers. the
Pilgrims, to Plymouth, Massachusetts
in 1620. Friendly Indians helped
these Pilgrims settle into the land.
But as the colonies grew, the Indians
were pushed back. By 1733, there
were thirteen colonies, and these
colonies were well on their way to
becoming a free nation. However,
England had no intention of giving up
America. As a result, they
placed tax after tax upon the
colonies, which only made the colonies
more determined to free themselves
from England and its rule. So,
on April 19, 1775, fighting between
the colonists and British began.
During the war, the colonies voted for
and agreed upon independence. so on
July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress
adopted the Declaration of
Independence, written by a committee
under Thomas Jefferson.
Americans had now declared their
independence from England, but they
still had to fight for it, and they
did, along with the aid of France.
After a long and bloody war, America
won her independence from England when
General Cornwallis surrendered his
troops on October 19, 1781. The
Treaty of Paris officially ended the
war in 1783. Today,
America celebrates July 4th as
Independence Day.
This
was only the beginning for this great
nation, for there were many more wars
to come and many more hardships to
bear. This great country would
even face a horrible civil war between
brothers. But she would survive
it all. America grew from a vast
wilderness to her original thirteen
colonies into the strong 50 states
that she has today. But America
could not be the great nation that she
is without the guidance of our Lord.
Long may she live!
May GOD Bless America!
"Righteousness exalteth a nation; but
sin is a reproach to any people."
