Pledge of Allegiance

A pledge is a solemn promise; allegiance means our loyalty, our support, and our devotion to duty.  The flag is a symbol of all that America is and means and stands for.  The words of the pledge were written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy of Boston, who was an associate editor for a young people's magazine called The Youth's Companion.  The pledge was printed in leaflet form and distributed to schools all over the country to be used in the National School Celebration honoring the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus.  Congress adopted the pledge in 1942 and in 1956 passed a resolution adding the words "under God".  Since then it has been customary for schools to display a flag in each classroom so that students may begin the day with the pledge to the American flag.

  What the Pledge means...

When we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United Sates of America, we are solemnly promising that we will do all in our power to support, to protect, and to defend the Constitution, the institutions, the laws, and the very spirit of our free nation under God.
