The
Texas State Capitol is
located on Congress Avenue
in Austin, Texas.
The Capitol houses offices
for the governor,
secretary of state and all
legislators, as well as
the Senate and House
chambers, a library,
bookstore and cafeteria.
The Texas State Capitol
was designed by Elijah E.
Myers in 1881.
Construction began on the
Capitol in February 1882.
The Capitol is constructed
of Sunset Red granite from
Marble Falls, Texas.
The Goddess of Liberty
stands atop the great
dome.
On
San Jacinto Day, April 21,
1888, the Capitol was
opened to the public.
Sam Houston's son, Temple
Houston, accepted the
building at the dedication
with these words, "This
building fires the heart
and excites reflections in
the minds of all... the
architecture of a
civilization is its most
enduring feature, and by
this structure shall Texas
transmit herself to
posterity..."
The Texas State Capitol
was designated a National
Historic Landmark in 1986
for its "significant
contribution to American
