The Texas State Capitol is located on Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas.  The Capitol houses offices for the governor, secretary of state and all legislators, as well as the Senate and House chambers, a library, bookstore and cafeteria.

The Texas State Capitol was designed by Elijah E. Myers in 1881.  Construction began on the Capitol in February 1882.  The Capitol is constructed of Sunset Red granite from Marble Falls, Texas.  The Goddess of Liberty stands atop the great dome.

On San Jacinto Day, April 21, 1888, the Capitol was opened to the public.  Sam Houston's son, Temple Houston, accepted the building at the dedication with these words, "This building fires the heart and excites reflections in the minds of all... the architecture of a civilization is its most enduring feature, and by this structure shall Texas transmit herself to posterity..."

The Texas State Capitol was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 for its "significant contribution to American history".
